I just re-read this book (finishing it literally twenty minutes ago. I remember reading somewhere that Westlake was a Wodehouse fan, and this was my first time reading this novel since reading Wodehouse. I was struck by how much the narration reminded me of Bertie Wooster. It was certainly a Westlake original, but I could not help noticing similarities between the gullible protagonist and Wodehouse’s dimwitted hero. I wonder if anyone else has seen the similarities?
I haven’t read the Wodehouse book so I can’t compare but your comment has sparked my interest. I’ll pick it up sometime and keep your observation in mind.
